Singapore GP: Sainz leads 1-2 finish in FP2
30th September 2022Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz led a 1-2 finish for Ferrari, ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, in the Singapore Grand Prix FP2 session with a blistering 1:42.587.
How second practice unfolded…
In a similar fashion to FP1, the Alfa Romeo’s of Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou were the first drivers to venture out onto the night-covered circuit with the former out first.
After the first set of runs, Mercedes’ George Russell put the quickest the lap time on the board but it wasn’t before the fastest man in FP1, and Russell’s teammate: Lewis Hamilton, set reset the fastest lap with a 1:44.091 – 0.570 seconds faster than he younger Briton.
Within the opening minutes of FP2, William’s outgoing driver, Nicholas Latifi, has seen in a fight with his seatbelts after he complained there was an issue with his shoulder straps.
Similar to FP1, after the first 10 minutes, Russell nearly found himself in the barrier after he couldn’t get the car slowed down enough through the Singapore Sling (Turn 10 – Turn 11).
As the session crept over its quarter mark, the top 10 drivers – with Hamilton and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in the top two positions, respectively – had completed their fastest laps with the yellow-walled medium compound tyres. Both Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were yet to complete a timed lap.
However, Perez’s mechanics were examining an earlier driveshaft issue with his 2022 championship contender while his Dutch teammate ventured out onto the circuit with the white-walled, hard compound tyres.
As the session crossed its halfway mark, with just over 20 minutes left to go, all of the drivers had set a lap time onto the board with Sainz on top, ahead of Russell and Hamilton in second and third respectively.
Shortly after, Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly was forced to make a hastly extraction from his AT03 as his rool-hoop caught fire while his Mechanics maneuvered the car towards the garage. Fortunately, the team’s mechanics were quick to put the fire out before the continued to push the car into the garage.
As the session drew to its conclusion, following the field’s qualifying runs, Sainz topped the timing board with a lap time of 1:42.587 ahead of Leclerc and Russell, who were in P2 and P3 respectively.
Despite being 15th on the timing board, Verstappen finally got a qualifying run under his belt and put in the fourth best time with a lap time which was 0.339s slower than Sainz.
