F3 Dutch GP: Maloney secures pole as Alatalo causes late red flag
2nd September 2022Trident’s Zane Maloney secured pole position ahead of ART’s, championship-contender, Victor Martins as Jenzer Motorsport’s William Alatalo brought out a late red flag.
How qualifying unfolded…
In usual fashion, the Formula 3 drivers piled into the fast lane, of the pit road, in a uniformed fashion. However, there was a slight amount of congestion as those at the pit exit struggled to get out on track.
Despite this, the congestion only hindered the pack for a matter of seconds.
On the F3 championship leader’s first flying lap, Hitech’s Isack Hadjar put in an aggressive lap and nearly binned it into the gravel trap at turn 10. As the Hitech driver rotated around the corner, his rear tyre snapped out beneath him. Fortunately, the Frenchman managed to regain control of his car but the slide had significantly impacted his lap time.
After the first set of flying laps, ART’s Victor Martins topped the timing board with 1:25.152 which was 0.104 seconds faster than Van Amersfoort Racing’s Franco Colapinto. At the other end of the table, the championship leader sat down in P19, ahead of Prema’s Arthur Leclerc (P20) and behind Campos’ Sebastian Montoya (P18), over a second off the pace.
With just over 10 minutes left on the clock, Trident’s Zane Maloney topped the leaderboard as he went fastest with a 1:24.386, 0.290 seconds faster than Martins who was demoted down to P2.
The pack soon returned to the pit lane, in the last 10 minutes of the session, for a brief stop in qualifying. But, the pack were soon back out for their final runs with just over five minutes to go.
As the field remained on course to improve their lap times, William Alatalo, of Jenzer Motorsport, brought out the red flag to end the session prematurely.
The Jenzer driver raced into the banked left-hander of turn three but his rear tyres lost grip and began to rotate around, the Finnish driver attempted to regain control of his car but he overcorrected. As a result, the Jenzer found itself in the barrier on the corner exit.
