Audi set to join F1 in 2026
26th August 2022Audi is set to join the Formula 1 grid, in 2026, as a power-unit manufacturer.
Audi and Porsche have been rumoured to join the F1 grid as talks of the new power unit regulations were agreed, earlier this month, which would make the sport a more attractive opportunity to join.
Today, Audi have announced that they will join the grid as a power unit supplier from 2026.
While the power units will remain the same, with a V6 internal combustion engine, it has been reported that Audi were joining due to the new regulations which will increase electrical power and use 100% sustainable fuel.
F1 president and CEO, Stefano Domenicali said:
“I am delighted to welcome Audi to Formula 1, an iconic automotive brand, pioneer and technological innovator.
“This is a major moment for our sport that highlights the huge strength we have as a global platform that continues to grow.
“It is also a big recognition that our move to sustainably fuelled hybrid engines in 2026 is a future solution for the automotive sector.
“We are all looking forward to seeing the Audi logo on the grid and will be hearing further details from them on their plans in due course.”
The new power unit will be developed in Audi Sport’s facility, in Neuburg. Of which, the manufacturer say there are already ‘test benches’ in their facility, and they are currently getting personnel, buildings and technical infrastructure in place by the end of 2022.
