WRC: Tanak secures Rally Belgium win over Evans
21st August 2022 0 By Kamron KentHyundai’s Ott Tanak secured his third rally win of the season after both, his teammate, Thierry Neuville and Toyota’s championship leader, Kalle Rovanpera crashed out.
How the final day unfolded…
Only four stages lined up the final day of Rally Belgium, as Tanak looked to cement his lead and secure his third rally win of the season.
Despite Tanak’s best efforts, Toyota’s Elfyn Evans put in a superb performance after the Welshman secured the opening two stages of the day.
The Welshman’s opening stage win, SS17, was the biggest of the morning as he cut down Tanak’s lead down by 1.1 seconds. Evans soon cut the time down by another 0.4 seconds, as he secured his second win of the day.
However, as the pack arrived at stage 19, Tanak still had a 6.7 second lead over the British driver.
On the penultimate stage, SS19, M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Fourmaux wrecked his Puma after he slipped off the course and into a ditch.
After the Puma slipped head-first into the grass-filled ditch, it ricocheted back onto the road before it collided with a telephone pole which caused significant damage to his front bumper and bonnet.
The Frenchman was able to continue on but he soon pulled off to the side of the stage. As a result, the stage was interrupted.
When the stage resumed, both Tanak and Evans drove with fury. However, Tanak came out in front as he secured his first stage win of the day and extended his rally lead by 7.2 seconds.
Despite Evans’ best efforts across the weekend, the Welshman wasn’t able to topple Tanak from the top spot.
Podium:
- Ott Tanak, Hyundai
- Elfyn Evans, Toyota
- Esapekka Lappi, Toyota
Powerstage winner: Kalle Rovanpera, Toyota
