WRC: Craig Breen crashes out of Rally Belgium
20th August 2022M-Sport Ford’s Craig Breen has crashed out of the WRC’s Ypres Rally Belgium after the Irish driver ran wide and put his car into a ditch.
Breen, who was running fifth in the standings as the sport entered its second day, found himself in a ditch after he ran wide around a fast left-hander.
The Ford driver one of three drivers, including Toyota’s Esapekka Lappi and Ford’s Gus Greensmith, on the course when the incident occurred.
As Breen raced along the narrow route, he cut into the left-hand corner which resulted in understeer on the exit. At that moment, the Ford’s right-hand side slipped down into the ditch and rolled to a stop, on its side.
Fortunately, both Breen and his co-driver, Paul Nagle, were okay and managed to get out of the car. However, a fire started around the Puma. The fire was quickly put out as spectators doused water over the area.
Soon after, the fans helped roll the car back onto its wheels but they weren’t able to push the car out of the ditch.
It was later found, his teammate, Adrien Fourmaux, had knocked the haybale – that should’ve been there – into the adjacent ditch as he understeered out of the corner.
Fortunately, the Frenchman was able to continue on and finish the stage – 0.3 seconds slower than Hyundai’s Oliver Solberg.
As a result, the stage was interrupted. Only four driver completed the stage, in a competitive manner, before the interruption: Solberg, Fourmaux, Takamoto Katsuta (Toyota) and Kalle Rovanpera (Toyota).
