Kimi Raikkonen set for NASCAR debut this weekend

Formula 1’s 2007 world champion, Kimi Raikkonen, is set to debut in the NASCAR Cup Series at the Watkins Glen International, this weekend.

The Finnish driver is set to make his Cup Series debut at the 2022 Go Bowling at the Glen, in Watkins Glen, this weekend.

The former world champion will pilot the #91 Chevrolet Camaro as part of Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 initiative.

Raikkonen has familiarised himself with the stock Chervolet Camaro after he put it through its paces at the Virginia International Raceway, on the road course layout. As a result, the Finn has – reportedly – got a fair understanding of what the car is doing under his control.

This will be the former world champion’s first outing in a competitive motorsport category since he retired from the world of Formula 1 back in 2021, setting the record for race starts (350).

Raikkonen, better known as the Iceman in F1, has been warned that he will face more aggressive rivals this weekend. Besides driving in ovals, the NASCAR series is also known for its more intense wheel-to-wheel battles.

Contact with other drivers is a frequent occurrence, something the former world champion would have to get used to.

It may be the Iceman’s first taste of NASCAR Cup racing, but it won’t be his first ever-taste of the sport as he competed in the Xfinity and the Camping World Truck series back in 2011.

However, it has been reported that this will only be a one-off appearance for the 2007 world champion.

That’s all for the article: Kimi Raikkonen set for NASCAR debut this weekend! How do you think the Iceman will fare in his first NASCAR outing? Let us know in the comments!
