Alonso signs at Aston Martin for 2023

Alpine’s two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso, is set to leave the French team at the end of the season and will replace the outgoing Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin, for 2023.

Prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix, the four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel shocked the Formula 1 paddock as he released a video on social media, announcing his retirement from F1 at the end of the season.

Aston Martin have worked quickly in finding a replacement for their outgoing four time world champion with Alpine’s Alonso.

Alonso’s name was in contention for the vacant seat, after the news of Vettel’s departure alongside the likes of Formula E’s Mercedes-EQ defending world champion, Nyck de Vries and, the 2021 Formula 2 World Champion, Oscar Piastri.

Vettel suggested that he would like Haas’ Mick Schumacher to take his seat at the Silverstone-based team.

Alonso went into the two-week summer break in good form after the two-time world champion has pulled together a string of great results. The Spaniard has secured eight point finishes, in the last eight races, compared to his teammate’s Esteban Ocon six.

This move will now free up a vacant seat at Alpine, a seat the French team were looking for to place their young protégé, Piastri, in.
