F1 British GP: Max Verstappen tops final practice ahead of qualifying
2nd July 2022Red Bull’s defending world champion, Max Verstappen became the third different driver to set the fastest time this weekend ahead of the British Grand Prix qualifying session.
How final practice unfolded…
As the pit exit light went green, Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel was the first driver to venture out onto the Silverstone circuit on the white-ringed, hard compound tyres. However, the four-time world champion returned to the pits after he completed an installation lap but he drove straight back out after he swapped the hards for the yellow-ringed medium compounds.
It was Alpine’s Esteban Ocon who set the first lap time on the board with a 1:33.068. Ocon’s two-time world champion teammate, Fernando Alonso was the second driver to set a timed lap around the British circuit but the Spaniard was nearly a second and a half slower than his younger teammate.
It wasn’t long before the heavy hitters came about and quickly topped the timing board with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc out on top with a 1:29.452, followed by his Spanish teammate Carlos Sainz who was three-tenths slower. Out the Red Bulls, Sergio Perez was the first driver to come out onto the track while his world champion teammate, Max Verstappen remained in the garage.
On Perez’s first lap, the Mexican managed to split the two Ferrari’s with a time good enough to place him P2, 0.177 seconds slower than Leclerc.
As the session crept into its second half, Verstappen had come out of his garage and topped the timing board with a 1:28.386 as Lewis Hamilton went P2 and George Russel, P3.
However, when the session crept into its final quarter, Verstappen reset the fastest time as he completed a flying lap with a blistering 1:27.901, four-tenths faster than Leclerc.
