F1 & Social Media stand by Sir Lewis Hamilton after Nelson Piquet remarks
28th June 2022Former F1 World Champion, Nelson Piquet has come under fire today after he was found using racial language against Sir Lewis Hamilton.
On a podcast, last year, Piquet discussed the first lap incident between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 British Grand Prix. This weekend will mark the first year since the two championship protagonists collided last season.
When the multiple world champion discussed the topic, he used offensive language in regards to the seven-time world champion.
Since the news broke out, Hamilton defended his corner on Twitter, he said:
“It’s more than language. These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport.
“I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life.
“There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action.”
Piquet’s remarks have also been condemned by the FIA, Mercedes and F1.
F1 stated:
“Discriminatory or racist language is unacceptable in any form and has no part in society.
“Lewis is an incredible ambassador for our sport and deserves respect.
“His tireless efforts to increase diversity and inclusion are a lesson to many and something we are committed to at F1.”
Naturally, Mercedes released a statement defending Hamilton which said:
“We condemn in the strongest terms any use of racist or discriminatory language of any kind.
“Lewis has spearheaded our sport’s efforts to combat racism, and he is a true champion of diversity on and off the track.
“Together, we share a vision for a diverse and inclusive motorsport, and this incident underlines the fundamental importance of continuing to strive for a brighter future.”
Ferrari and Aston Martin have also supported Mercedes and Hamilton, on Twitter, in light of this news.
However, fans and social media users have ventured onto social media to support and defend the F1 driver while some have looked at Red Bull Racing to release a statement condemning the actions of the former world champion.
As Red Bull’s defending world champion, Verstappen, is currently dating the three-time world champion’s daughter, Kelly Piquet.
As it stands, ‘Nelson Piquet,’ ‘Lewis,’ and ‘Max Verstappen’ are currently trending on Twitter.
