F1 Canadian GP: Max Verstappen Friday Fastest Man
17th June 2022Red Bull’s Max Verstappen closed out Friday as the fastest man after he secured the quickest lap in free practice two of the Canadian Grand Prix.
How FP2 unfolded…
In the early moments of the session, the stewards were called into action after an unsafe release from Aston Martin. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was on his way out of the pit lane, and on his way to pass the Aston garage, but the mechanic gave the signal for Sebastian Vettel to bolt out of his box.
This wasn’t the only issue the stewards were called into action for as Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly had allegedly not followed the race directors instructions. This came after the Frenchman went deep into the final chicane, and rejoined the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on the wrong side of the bollard, on the right hand side rather than the left.
Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas looked to have a terrible practice session as he was yet to set a timed lap as his car, reportedly, suffered anti-stall.
At the halfway point, Verstappen had climbed to the top of the timing board with a 1:14.127 lap with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz behind in P2 and P3, respectively.
As the session crawled into its dying minutes, Verstappen remained ahead of Leclerc and Sainz as they were on the on their race runs. Whereas Mercedes’ George Russell sat P7 while the seven-time world champion sat in P13.

- Charles Leclerc, Ferrari (+0.081 – Soft Tyre)
- Carlos Sainz, Ferrari (+0.225 – Soft Tyres)
