F1 Monaco GP: Charles Leclerc tops second practice
27th May 2022Ferrari’s Monegasque, Charles Leclerc, topped both Friday practice sessions in his hometown of Monaco as he secured the fastest lap of FP2 ahead of his teammate Carlos Sainz.
How practice unfolded…
In a similar fashion to FP1, the drivers went straight out onto the Circuit de Monaco as soon as the pit exit light went green. After three minutes past, only McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, both Aston Martin drivers and both Alfa Romeo’s were yet to leave the pits.
Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas was the only driver to not set a time in FP1 after his team investigated the rear of the car for a technical issue. However, this wasn’t the case in FP2 and the Finn was finally able to get a lap time on the board.
With less than 48 minutes left on the clock, Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel nearly brought his session to an end. As the four-time world champion bolted his AMR22 into the swimming pool chicane, he briefly lost control of his car. Fortunately, he managed to keep his rear tyres away from the barrier.
However, the same could not be said for Ricciardo. The Australian blasted his car through Tabac (turn nine) and towards the swimming pool chicane. As Ricciardo entered the corner, his rear tyres lost grip and suffered oversteer. He tried to recollect his MCL36 but the Aussie found the rear of his car in the barrier.
Ricciardo’s McLaren then slid down the track and into the polystyrene barrier – which lined the following chicane.
The session was soon red flagged. However, the stoppage was brief and the drivers were soon back out on track.
As the session wore on, drivers were testing the boundaries with the narrow barriers on their soft tyre runs. Both McLaren’s Lando Norris and Mercedes George Russell tagged the wall on their fast laps, in the second half of FP2.
While Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton made use of the run off area into Mirabeau, the same location Nico Rosberg placed his Mercedes in the 2014 qualifying session.
