Lando Norris makes P8 finish despite illness

McLaren’s Lando Norris finished the Spanish Grand Prix P8, in blistering conditions, but his race was impressive by the fact he was unwell.

Norris had been battling with illness all weekend ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, as he revealed in the post-qualifying press conference.

According to Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz, his condition was not COVID-19 related following a series of Covid tests.

It was later revealed by The Race that the young Briton was diagnosed with tonsillitis.

He was reportedly suffering with sickness, vision problems, a lack of energy and sleep after his qualifying performance on Saturday.

Despite being ill, Norris was able to briefly take a place inside Q3 before his final Q2 lap time was deleted for being, just, over the white line. This demoted the #4 McLaren back inside the elimination zone and promoted the Haas of Mick Schumacher to Q3.

Prior to the Spanish Grand Prix, Norris was trying his best to not let his illness impact race day – despite the blistering temperatures.

During the Spanish national anthem, Norris was found to be absent as he was reported to be seen by his team for additional refreshments.

In the hot temperatures, the McLaren driver managed to push through his symptoms and finish the race P8, ahead of his teammate Daniel Ricciardo who finished P12.

After the race, Norris wasn’t avaliable to the press as he was seeking medical attention at his representative motorhome. Which resulted in his diagnosis of Tonsillitis.

Hopefully, with plenty of rest, the young McLaren driver will be fit and well enough to race at Monaco, in a weeks time.
