F1 Miami Grand Prix: Mercedes George Russell leads second practice
7th May 2022Mercedes’ George Russell led Friday’s second practice ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, in an incident-filled session.
How the second practice session unfolded…
When the pit exit light went green the drivers rushed out to the track for the second time today, as they did in the first practice session. Williams’ Nicholas Latifi was the first driver to set a timed lap but this was quickly beaten as Alpine’s Esteban Ocon topped the timing board, after the first set of laps.
However, Alpine’s Frenchman was soon beaten by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz who set a 1:30.964 within the first 15 minutes.
All drivers had set their lap times on the yellow-ringed medium tyres.
On the otherhand, Haas had issues with their bodywork as Mick Schumacher returned to the pits due to a sidepod issue.
The red flag was brought out, with 42 minutes on the clock, as Sainz took too much speed into the technical section of the Miami circuit and scraped across the barrier. Fortuantely, Sainz was okay and got out of his car soon after the incident.
At the start of the session, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had a gearbox change – as a precaution. However, the defending world champion wasn’t able to complete a lap as he complained that he wasn’t able to steer. As a result, Verstappen slowly returned to the pits.
During this time, Mercedes’ George Russell topped the timing board with a 1:29.938, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez respectively.
By the end of the session, the top three remained unchanged with Russell out front ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton.
