During Free Practice 2 of the Sao Paulo GP, at Brazil’s iconic Interlagos circuit (Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace), Camara enjoyed his second session outing for the squad he will race for in 2027, having replaced Esteban Ocon for the weekend – who will no longer race for the team this season.
However, he found himself in hot water with the stewards after the Brazilian impeded Leclerc on the run through the main straight, despite being warned of the incoming Monegasque.
Onboards showed that Camara weaved and moved into the racing line, which Leclerc had to take evasive action, resulting in most of his car being off the circuit and onto a bumpy run-off.
Thankfully, both drivers were able to avoid a collision and were okay following the incident, able to continue their duties without issue. However, the stewards deemed the situation to be dangerous, prompting a reprimand for Haas’ rookie.
‘Ferrari is coming first’ says Vassuer on heated team battles
In the stewards report, they said:
“The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 51 (Rafael Camara), team representatives and reviewed video, team radio and in-car video evidence and determined that Car 51 was warned multiple times that Car 16 (LEC) was arriving on a fast lap.
“Yet, Car 51 was weaving and moving well into the racing line. Car 16 had to take evasive action to avoid a collision by moving to the right, with a significant amount of the car off the track.
“The situation that was created was clearly dangerous and Car 51 should have taken more care to avoid impeding Car 16.
“While the typical penalty for impeding in a Free Practice session is a warning, in this instance, we are of the view that a reprimand is warranted.”
