The young Italian star, Antonelli is on the cusp of securing his maiden world championship title having secured his ninth win of the season at the Circuit of the Americas, at the United States Grand Prix. In a weekend where it was a slim chance for the 20-year-old to take the title, Antonelli has put himself in a strong position to take the championship in Mexico this weekend.
After his teammate, George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finished eighth and fourth, it meant the two rivals for Antonelli remained within championship contention by one and two points, respectively, to drag the title fight to Mexico this weekend.
Speaking to the press after the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli was asked about his mentality, going into Mexico this weekend. The Italian championship leader expects to carry the same mentality in Mexico City as he did in Austin – having fun. He said:
“I mean, I’m going to approach it with the same mindset, just trying to have as much fun as possible, trying to hopefully fight for another win.
“But, yeah, it would be best to finish on a high, and that’s the goal. But, yeah, I’m just going to try to enjoy the rest of the season from now on.”
According to the latest set of permutations, if Antonelli finishes anywhere from first to eighth in Mexico City, the title is his, regardless to where Russell and Hamilton finish.
On the other hand, both Russell and Hamilton are required to win the race to have any hope of pushing the championship to Sao Paulo, at the end of the triple header.
For Russell to keep the title fight alive, he needs to win the race and Antonelli needs to finish ninth, 10th or lower, while for Hamilton; he needs his successor to finish 10th or lower as long as the seven-time champion wins the race.
Formula 1 heads to Mexico City this weekend with the event getting underway from October 30 to November 1.
