Norris has continued with his form from final practice earlier on Saturday, with the Briton converting his performance in FP3 into pole position in qualifying, beating Hamilton by 0.012 seconds.

The defending world champion had dominated qualifying, setting the fastest lap times across all three individual sessions, with Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rounding out the top three at the Hungaroring.

Going into qualifying, Ferrari decided to be the only team in Q1 to utilise their fastest runs on the medium compounds, whilst everyone else used the softs. The yellow-ringed tyres were enough for the two Scuderia to progress into Q2.

From there, it looked to be a fight for the fastest lap against the two Ferraris and Norris. In Q2, Hamilton was able to progress into the final third using only one set of soft tyres, whilst Leclerc had to use two sets.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli had a touch-and-go moment, needing to deliver on his final lap of Q2 after his banker lap was deleted for track limits at turn seven. Thankfully, the championship leader was able to progress, having secured eighth place overall.

Drama wrapped up qualifying as everyone else was setting out their final runs, with Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen spinning out at the final corner. This impacted the final run of George Russell, who aborted his final lap, finishing seventh overall. However, the Mercedes driver soon retired at the end of qualifying, stopping out on track at turn one.

However, Antonelli found himself in hot water with the stewards, qualifying fourth, as he was noted for a yellow-flag infringement. But he was not the only one, with Hamilton getting his own investigation for impeding McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.
