How did AI predictions fare in 2025?

Ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, we asked the artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT to predict six factors of the season and here are the results.

Prediction – Last Constructor: Haas F1

Result: Wrong – Alpine

ChatGPT predicted that Haas would finish at the bottom of the order in the constructors’ championship standings, following an all-new line-up of Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman. It claimed ‘recent performance trends and line-up changes’ would be the key factor in their downfall.

However, the team finished eighth in the team standings, with Alpine going to the bottom of the table after a turbulent season.

Prediction – Most improved team: Ferrari

Result: Wrong – Williams

Having finished as runners-up in the 2024 season, falling behind eventual title winners McLaren, ChatGPT claimed that Ferrari would stand as the most improved team, in addition to the arrival of Lewis Hamilton.

This prediction was also wrong as it was clear at the chequered flag that Williams were the most-improved team of the season, with two podium finishes and a jump from eighth place (2024) to fifth in the constructors’ championship.

Prediction – Most Podiums: Lando Norris

Result: Correct

Following McLaren’s championship-winning season in 2024, ChatGPT suggested Lando Norris would take home the most podiums across the season.

This was the software’s first correct prediction as the McLaren driver went on to secure 18 podium finishes across the 24-race season on his way to championship glory, including his championship-winning race in Abu Dhabi.

Prediction – Most wins across the season: Max Verstappen

Result: Correct

Following a record-breaking season in 2023, for most wins in a season (19), and another nine collected in 2024, the AI predicted the pattern would remain, with Max Verstappen sealing the most race wins across the year.

It was also correct on this point as the four-time world champion claimed eight wins across the year, pipping both McLaren drivers (7) by one race win.

Prediction – Constructors champions: McLaren

Result: Correct

It was probably ChatGPT’s easiest prediction to make of the season as the Woking-based team clinched their second back-to-back title. It claimed the Woking squad would ‘maintain its momentum’ going into 2025.

Prediction – Drivers Champion: Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc

Result: Wrong – Lando Norris

ChatGPT couldn’t decide on who would be the driver’s champion for the season, but it put the ball fairly in Ferrari’s court by selecting both Hamilton and Charles Leclerc as likely winners.

Leclerc was given support on the basis that Ferrari would build upon a ‘strong finish’ in 2024, whilst Hamilton was said to win the championship as long as the team give him a competitive car.

As the record books will show, that prediction was wrong, and the title eventually went to Norris in Abu Dhabi.
