Following the recent announcement of the United Kingdom’s New Year’s Honours List, it was revealed that Brundle, 65, has been awarded with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). The award follows his ‘services to motor racing and to sports broadcasting,’ as the list revealed.

The Briton, former F1 driver has driven for teams like Jordan, McLaren, Benetton, Brabham and others, and has commented on the sport for nearly three decades alongside the great Murray Walker and David Croft, currently.

Following the announcement, Brundle went to social media to express his gratitude for receiving the award. He said:

“Thank you for so many lovely messages, they mean as much to me as the OBE, which is a great deal to say the least.

“My eternal and sincere thanks to family, friends, motorsport and broadcasting teammates, and motorsport folk and fans, for the help and support since I first grass-tracked a Ford Anglia 53 years ago.

“It’s been a blast, I’m a very lucky man.”

Brundle is the most recent of the F1 paddock to be named in the UK’s New Year’s Honours List with the likes of Sir Lewis Hamilton, who will be enjoying new pastures in Maranello from January 1, and Christian Horner who achieved Knighthoods and CBE’s respectively.

The 65-year-old’s award, the OBE, ranks under the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire where it stands in between Commander and Member of the Order of the British Empire, respectively.

Following the news of his OBE, Brundle received impressive support from his peers with Karun Chandhok describing him as the ‘Adrian Newey of Commentary.’ His former competitor and colleague at Sky Sports – ahead of his departure this season – Damon Hill, 1996 F1 World Champion, claimed the award was ‘much deserved,’ he said:

“Much deserved honour for the Bard of Kings Lynn.

“If anyone thinks talking is easy, I’ll challenge them to do what Martin has done for our sport. Like the proverbial Swan, he retains perfect posture when all around are flapping ducks.

“Happy New season Martin Brundle OBE”

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
