Who Finished Where: 2024 Chinese GP Sprint Race
20th April 2024Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured the sprint win ahead of Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton and, teammate, Sergio Perez but where did the rest of the field filter out?
Saturday, April 20 marked the first Formula 1 race in China since 2019 when the sport last raced at the Shanghai International Circuit.
It was a dry session for the sprint which consisted of 19 laps around the Chinese track, where McLaren’s Lando Norris topped the grid on pole position alongside Lewis Hamilton in second.
Who finished where at the chequered flag?
Fourth place may have been the starting position for Verstappen ahead of the Sprint race, but in the end, the reigning world champion fought his way through to secure the race win. Hamilton and Perez completed the top three in second and third respectively.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top five, in fourth and fifth, despite a tough inter-team fight between the two Scuderia cars.
Norris, who started on pole, dropped back to P7 on the opening lap as he ran wide at the opening two corners in his fight with Hamilton. In the end, the Briton recovered to P6 ahead of his teammate, Oscar Piastri who finished seventh.
Mercedes’ trailing car, piloted by George Russell, rounded out the point-scoring positions in eighth place. The #63 Mercedes was also the only car to use the soft tyres in the sprint while the rest opted for the medium compounds.
Kick Sauber’s Chinese driver, Zhou Gunayu just missed out on points in his home race as he finished six seconds behind Russell in ninth. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen completed the top 10, in 10th.
RB’s Daniel Ricciardo was the leading driver in the bottom 10, in P11, ahead of Valtteri Bottas (Kick Sauber), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) who finished 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th respectively.
Yuki Tsunoda finished the first sprint of ‘24 down in P16 to lead the remaining drivers as both Williams ended the race down in 17th and 18th, with Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant.
Nico Hulkenberg, Haas, was the last of the drivers to finish the race down in 19th.
Alonso was the only driver not to finish the race after he made contact with Sainz on lap 16. The contact resulted in a front-right puncture for the two-time world champion. When he pitted for a tyre change, the team opted to withdraw him from the races due to significant damage to his AMR24.
