Australian GP: Sainz secures victory after recovery as Verstappen retires

Carlos Sainz of Ferrari secured his third career victory at the Australian Grand Prix after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was forced to retire with brake problems.
Sainz will add Australia to his tally of career wins, alongside Great Britain and Singapore as he withheld the advances of his teammate, Charles Leclerc throughout the race.
This impressive feat also follows the Spaniard’s recent appendectomy which he had to undergo in Jeddah, two weeks ago, where he missed out on the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Sainz started the race in P2, alongside the reigning world champion Verstappen who had secured pole position. When lights went out, it was an even start between the two but the Red Bull had the lead at the opening corner.
However, a lap later, Sainz moved for the lead at turn nine.
On lap three, Verstappen slowed as his brakes began to smoke. By the end of the lap, he pulled into the pit lane where his tyre exploded before coming to a stop in his box with his brakes on fire.
The reigning champion was seen climbing out of his car and retired from the race.
From there, Sainz was unchallenged out in front and he went on to secure victory with Leclerc completing a 1-2 finish for the Scuderia.
There’s no doubt Sainz’s victory will increase his standings in the driver market as he remains without a seat for 2025.
In terms of the drivers standings, Leclerc has moved up to second whereas the race winner, Sainz, occupies fourth. For the constructors, Ferrari’s 1-2 moves the team to within four points of the championship leaders of Red Bull.
