Rovanpera takes part-time schedule for WRC 2024

Toyota’s Kalle Rovanpera is set to take a part-time programme for 2024 with the ambition to recharge his batteries and come back stronger in future seasons.

At only 23 years of age, Rovanpera is set to take a break from full-time rallying in the World Rally Championship after securing his second world championship less than a month ago.

Despite his young age, the Finnish two-time WRC champion feels like this opportunity has come at the right time. Rovanpera has stated he has been rallying for the last 15 years, since the age of eight, and has worked hard to make his ambition and passion a reality.

On his official YouTube channel, the two-time world champion explained his decision, he said:

“Next year we are going to see some changes for me and Jonne [Halttunen] because we are going to drive half of the WRC calendar next season.

“There are many reasons behind this but the biggest reason is that I have driving rally already for 15 years, which is quite a long time. The last seasons have been, of course, amazing but also really demanding both mentally and physically.

“It’s consuming a lot of time and energy to fight for the championships and go around the world full-time on rallying.

“So I felt that now it would be a good moment to take this kind of year for recharging the batteries, refreshing the mind, and then come back again – full-time – to fight for the championships with full attack.”

The decision has come as a shock considering the Finnish driver stands as the youngest WRC champion when he secured his maiden title last season, followed by further title success this season.

Despite this, the double world champion is still set to continue on with Toyota Gazoo Racing in 2024.

Both Rovanpera and eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier will contest a partial programme for next season while Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta will see a full-time season.

According to the WRC, Ogier and Rovanpera will not share a car in 2024 despite other full-time positions. This means the likes of Katsuta may be asked to step aside at the events were the two world champions compete.

That’s all for the article; Rovanpera takes part-time schedule for WRC 2024!
