Norris fastest in FP2 of Dutch GP as Piastri and Ricciardo crash out

McLaren’s Lando Norris topped the second practice of the Dutch Grand Prix as his teammate Oscar Piastri and Alpha Tauri’s Daniel Ricciardo crashed out early on.

How the second practice unfolded…

In a similar instance to FP1, the pack were ready to head out on track as they queued up at the pit exit. Of the Alfa Romeo duo were out on track and naturally, set the first lap time on the board, on the medium (Guanyu Zhou) and hard compound (Valtteri Bottas) tyres.

A number of drivers quickly beat Bottas’ best time as Red Bull’s Sergio Perez topped the timing board with a 1:12.750 ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Ricciardo who stood in second and third respectively.

Mercedes’ Sir Lewis Hamilton soon beat the Mexican’s time to go three-hundredths faster. Hamilton’s teammate, George Russell quickly went third fastest to sandwich Perez in.

But, in the land of the orange Dutch army, it wasn’t long before Verstappen went to the top of the timing boards with a 1:12.449. At the same time, Perez improved his time to leapfrog Hamilton on the timing sheet and demoted the seven-time world champion to third-fastest.

The red flag was waved 10 minutes into the session as McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ricciardo had crashed into the barrier at turn three. Replays showed that Piastri had lost control of his McLaren into turn three and rear-ended his MCL-60 into the barrier before it snapped around to face the impacted area. 

In a bid to avoid the stranded McLaren, Ricciardo could not steer out of the corner and quickly found himself in the TechPro. Since then, it has been revealed that Ricciardo broke his hand in the incident, and will be replaced by Liam Lawson for the remainder of the weekend.

After 10 minutes, the session finally got back under green-flag conditions as the field lined up at the end of the pit lane. When the pit exit traffic light went green, just over 30 minutes remained on the clock. 

With just over 20 minutes left on the clock, McLaren’s Lando Norris topped the timing boards with a 1:11.330, two-hundredths of a second faster than Verstappen in second place as Williams’ Alexander Albon rounded out the top three.

As the chequered flag fell on the first day of running, the top three remained unchanged. Hamilton led the best of the rest in fourth ahead of Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Perez, Stroll, Bottas and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) respectively.
