Hulkenberg summoned to stewards for Canada GP red flag infringement
17th June 2023Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg has been summoned to the stewards for a red flag infringement as race control deemed the German driver failed to stay over the minimum time.
A red flag was flown in the early stages of Q3 of which the German driver secured a stunning lap just in time and pipped Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso to the position, who was in contention for a front-row start with a better run around the Canadian Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
When qualifying resumed, the track was in worse conditions and Aston Martin’s Spaniard confirmed his suspicions over his team radio on the belief no one would be able to improve their best times. This was to be the case and cemented the grid with a handful of minutes to go.
However, the summons comes from race control who allegedly believes the German driver went too slowly during the red flag stop. In the summons, the stewards stated:
“Alleged breach of Article 37.6 a) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations – Car 27 failing to stay above the minimum time set by the FIA ECU at 16:59.”
The red flag in question relates to Oscar Piastri who saw his qualifying session come on the exit of turn seven, when the young Australian went into the barrier backwards after a snap of oversteer.
When race control neutralised the session to allow track marshals to extract the stranded McLaren, Hulkenberg was allegedly too slow on his return to the pit lane.
According to the F1 Sporting Regulations, Article 37.6 a. states that when the signal is given to stop, ‘all cars must immediately reduce speed and proceed slowly back to the pit lane.’
To ensure the drivers reduce their speed a “RED FLAG” message appears on the ‘official messaging system’ until the cars cross the first safety car line when they enter the pit lane.
As a result of this, the drivers still out on track must stay above a minimum time which was set by the FIA ECU at least once in each marshalling sector.
Hulkenberg is expected to see the stewards at 18:40 local time, 23:40 BST. More will follow as this story develops.
