Wolff urges ‘no magic bullet’ as Mercedes look to improve W14
28th April 2023Mercedes-AMG F1 Team Principal, Toto Wolff, has stated there is ‘no magic bullet’ for performance as Mercedes looks to pounce on promising progress.
After three races in this current campaign, the Mercedes team currently sit in third place with 56 points, nine points behind second-placed Aston Martin (65pts).
At the same time, the team are still looking for their first win in 2023 since they have only obtained one in the last 12 months, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last year.
The Mercedes team principal has said the team has used the four-week gap between the Australian Grand Prix and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to find performance for their 2023 contender, the W14.
While the team have worked hard to close the gap between themselves and their competitors, Wolff has urged there is ‘no magic bullet’ in finding performance from these new regulations.
“Over the next races, we want to keep on making small steps forward” said Wolff, “The car will continue to evolve in the coming weeks, as we steadily bring performance and upgrades to the track. We’re excited to see their impact, but we know there is no magic bullet.”
Last time out, in Melbourne, Australia, the team’s seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, clenched his first podium finish of the year as his younger teammate, George Russell, led the opening stint of the grand prix before his engine gave way in explosive fashion.
Prior to that, it looked as if Mercedes were competitive alongside the likes of Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. Russell clenched his first front row start in Melbourne, starting in second place alongside defending world champion Max Verstappen who started on pole.
However, Wolff remains humble stating the team should not read ‘too much into a single result.’ He said:
“Australia showed that we are making progress, although we need to be cautious about reading too much into a single result.
“But the signs in Melbourne were still encouraging and that has been a good motivator for the whole team heading into this gap [Melbourne to Baku] in the calendar.”
That’s all for the article; Wolff urges ‘no magic bullet’ a Mercedes look to improve W14!
