GB3: Hedley secures win in soaked Oulton Park
10th April 2023Arden VRD’s James Hedley secured his maiden GB3 championship win after a soaking race, ahead of both Rodin Carlin’s Callum Voisin and JHR Development’s Joseph Loake.
How the race unfolded…
Before the race got underway, drama unfolded as Fortec Motorsport’s Jarrod Waberski spun out on the formation laps due to the increasingly wet conditions. As the rain continued to fall, several drivers pitted for wet condition tyres while a number of drivers remained on the slick tyres.
However, the race was suspended as the grid reformed, which allowed mechanics to come out onto the grid to fit the slick-tyre runners with wet tyres. By the third, and final, formation lap the circuit was drenched and the race had been reduced to a 12-lap race.
While the pack ran around Oulton Park for a third time, Douglas Motorsport’s Shawn Rashid was seen struggling to get out of his grid box. However, the Douglas driver eventually got going.
As the lights went out, it was a great start from the pole sitter of Hedley who blasted down into the first corner unchallenged. However, by the end of the first lap, Hedley lost the lead to Loake but on the run-up Hilltop and towards Knickerbrook, Hedley managed to regain the race lead.
At the end of lap four, Loake dropped down to third after Callum Voisin made a superb cut-back move on the final corner to move up into
The competition soon converted from a lapped race into a timed session. With just under four minutes, Hedley remained out in the lead, two seconds ahead of Voisin and Loake.
With two-and-a-half minutes left on the clock, two cars retired from the race. On the exit of the Knickerbrook Chicane, Morales beached his car in the gravel run-off while, at the same time, Rashid put his car into the wall. Double-waved yellows were brought out in the affected areas.
However, as it was in the latter stages, the safety car remained within the pit lane and Hedley went on to secure the win.
