Carlos Sainz reveals injury after Dakar retirement
18th January 2023Following his crash out of the 2023 Dakar Rally, on stage nine, Team Audi Sport’s Carlos Sainz has revealed he has fractured his T5 and T6 vertebrae.
On Monday, Sainz Snr – two World Rally champion and father to Foruma 1 driver, Carlos Sainz jr. – has revealed the extent of his injuries following his brutal crash out of the 2023 Dakar Rally.
Following advice from medical professionals, after pain in his back failed to subside, the Spaniard revealed – on Twitter – he had fractured his T5 and T6 vertebrae. Fortunately, Sainz has stated the fractured bones remain ‘stable’ and will focus on recovering ‘as soon as possible.’
On Twitter, the Spaniard said:
“Hello everyone, on my return to Madrid, the pain in my back after what happened in the Dakar Rally has persisted longer than normal. Following the doctors recommendation, I have undergone additional tests in order to accurately assess the extent of the injury.
“Unfortunately, the results have not brought good news, since I have fractured vertebrae T5 and T6. The positive note is that both vertebrae are stable and from today my priority will be to recover as soon as possible.
“Thank you all for the support and love received in recent days. I will keep you informed”
Sainz was in contention for the Dakar Rally win with rival – and eventual champion – Nasser Al-Attiyah, after a promising start to the event.
In his 16th outing in the Dakar Rally, the Spaniard secured the opening stage win but problems started to rise as the event progressed which ruined his chance to challenge for the win.
On the ninth stage, and targetting a good result, the Spaniard overshot a dune and smashed – nose-first – into the sand. Sainz and his co-driver, Lucas Cruz quickly emerged from the wreck.
While Cruz was unharmed, Sainz was soon airlifted to hospital but he wanted to continue. However, his Audi RS Q e-tron E2 was beyond repair after the incident which resulted in the duo’s retirement from the event.
