Rosberg X Racing help restore Sardinia after wildfires
5th December 2022Rosberg X Racing and Extreme E have partnered up to help restore the region of Sardinia, Italy, which was affected by Wildfires in 2021.
As part of Extreme E’s ‘legacy programme,’ the sport has partnered up with RXR following the NEOM Island X Prix to help restore an area damaged by wildfires in Italy. The event was co-organised by the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) and Regione Sardegna, earlier this year.
The programme, which includes partners such as Allianz, Life Terra and the MEDSEA Foundation, showcases Extreme E’s initiative which shares similar ambitions to RXR’s ‘Driven by Purpose’ campaign.
During his visit, RXR’s founder and CEO, Nico Rosberg said:
“Rosberg X Racing isn’t just about racing. We are in Sardinia to promote an important message, alongside Extreme E and our partners Allianz, Life Terra and the MEDSEA Foundation.
“Through our Driven By Purpose campaign we support social and environmental projects at each of the series’ race locations. With our help, Sardinia can come back to its natural beauty and I couldn’t be prouder of this vision.”
In their visit to Sardinia, Extreme E planned to restore over 4,000 acres of soil and plant 4,000 tress on the island which was heavily affected by wildfires.
Rosberg visited the region alongside the team’s driver, Mikaela Ahlin-Kouttunlinsky, as well as Professor Peter Wadhams – from Extreme E’s Scientific Committee.
The key figures of Extreme E were also joined by; Sennariolo’s Mayor: Giambattista Ledda, MEDSEA’s President: Alessio Satta, Life Terra founder: Sven Kallen and Head of the ACI in Sardinia: Giulio Pes di San Vittorio.
The 2016 Formula 1 World Champion, Rosberg, also managed to plant the one-millionth tree of the Life Terra project, which was launched earlier this year to help restore the area.
As such, the former world champion also received the Life Terra Climate Change Award for ‘Most Impactful Sustainability Entrepreneur’ for his actions in environmental causes.
Ahlin-Kottulinsky added:
“A key reason we exist as team RXR is to drive awareness, educate and help tackle climate change. For me, the most important race that I will ever participate in is the race to save our planet.
“Even though we can only have a small impact, we are hoping to inspire our fans and followers to do their part, too. Seeing the future generation join us today, gives me great hope.”
In 2021, fires in Sardinia destroyed 20,000 hectacres of land which forced over 1,000 people to move away from the area – killing 30 million bees in the process. The damage, cause by the fires, affected the livelihoods of those who lived in the area, its nature and the oceans water quality.
These wildfires produce 20% of the world’s total CO2 emissions and costs $5 billion to fight.
