Perez wags finger at home crowd amongst boos
31st October 2022Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was seen wagging a finger at his home crowd as boo’s began to erupt around the stadium section after the Mexico City Grand Prix.
After a third place finish, the Red Bull driver was seen wagging his finger at the home crowd as boo’s began to echo around the stadium of the Mexican circuit, the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
The boo’s were seeming targeted at Mercedes’ seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, who approached the media to conduct his post-race interview prior to the podium celebrations.
Boo’s are becoming a frequent occurrence in the sport as the Red Bull pairing were a victim of such act last time out in Austin, ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
When booing is heard, it is predominantly directed at either Hamilton or Red Bull’s leading man, Max Verstappen – dependant on the country they are in.
As such Mercedes’ Team Principle, Toto Wolff, expressed his opinion about the booing. When Wolff spoke to Sky Germany, he said:
“That is unacceptable. The booing, whether it’s on the podium or on the fan stage, nobody wants to see that. I think we [F1] have done a lot against this kind of behaviour.
“It is somewhat contained and it doesn’t belong here either. Something like that should not happen.
“In Austria it was against Lewis, here [in the US] it is massively against Max. We have to get everyone on the same page.
“We fight hard on and off the track, but we don’t have that kind of hostility towards each other.”
This isn’t the first time a member of the sport as spoken out about booing as, former F1 driver, Johnny Herbert instructed fans to stop booing Hamilton during the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix post-qualifying interviews.
While it is very unlikely much can be done to police booing from fans, it is commendable to see Perez try and stop his home crowd from booing his competitors.
