Alpine’s protest upheld Alonso returns to P7
28th October 2022Alpine’s protest, against Haas F1’s protest, has been upheld and their two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso, returned to P7 for the US Grand Prix.
After the US Grand Prix, last Sunday, Haas lodged a protest against both Alpine and Red Bull for having a car out on track in an unsafe condition.
The race stewards sided with Haas and branded Alonso with a 30-second time penalty which demoted the Spaniard down to P15, from seventh.
Following the protest, Alpine issued their own. The French team protested that Alonso wasn’t informed of the damage which would have required a trip to the pit lane, and they counter-protested Haas as the American team missed the initial deadline by 24 minutes.
However, the French team’s protest was deemed ‘not admissible’ which prompted Alpine to ask for a right of review. The right of review was based on the basis that the team had not been aware of the initial protest which was lodged 24 minutes after the deadline
In the wake of their victory, Alpine tweeted:
“BWT Alpine F1 Team thanks the FIA stewards for convening and reaching a positive conclusion on the matter involving Car #14 [Alonso] from last weekend’s United States Grand Prix.
“The team welcomes the decision made by the aforementioned stewards, whereby Car #14 reinstates its seventh place finish and six points from the race.
“We look forward to continuing our collaborative work alongside the FIA to ensure the racing spectacle is maintained to the highest quality.
“The team now looks forward to competing this weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix.”
The protest was initially handed in to make a point, as Haas’ Kevin Magnussen was shown the black and orange flag three times this season.
However, when Perez and Alonso trundled with damaged cars, around the Circuit of The America’s, they were not shown the black-and-orange flag.
Feeling a double-standard, it led Haas to file a protest to inquire why other cars were not shown the same treatment they’ve had this season.
