Will Ferrari fluster at Italian Grand Prix?
8th September 2022Returning to competitive form, with their first chance of tasting glory since 2008, Ferrari have buckled under pressure and seemingly handed both championship’s to their rival.
At the beginning of the season, with cars capable of closer racing, you could’ve have hoped for another close-fought season, like 2021. After the few opening rounds, it was clear to see the championship would go down between Red Bull Racing and Ferrari – the two teams who perfected the newest regulations.
The season looked promising with Red Bull’s double DNF and Ferrari’s first 1-2 finish since Singapore 2019, at the season opener in Bahrain, to Red Bull’s fight back to the top following reliability woes for the Italian outfit. However, reliability wouldn’t be Ferrari’s biggest concern: their strategy and pit stops would be.
Well-executed pit stops and well thought-out race strategies are the key to winning races – and securing world championships. Both seem to be the weakest aspect of Ferrari who look to be struggling in their ability to keep their house in order.
Despite the misfortunes of their strategy calls and pit stop blunders, Ferrari’s Team Principle, Mattia Binotto, doesn’t believe any changes should be made.
In Nico Rosberg’s interview with Sky Sports F1, during the Dutch Grand Prix post-race show, the 2016 F1 World Champion criticised Binotto’s stance on Ferrari’s current situation.
He said:
“Even Formula 2 teams, or even Formula 3 teams, do a better job at their strategy and pit stops than Ferrari – you’re in the pit and there’s no tyre there, in a normal race.
“At some point they really need to start making some changes.”
The former world champion went on to say:
“He [Binotto] needs to start making some changes there I feel because it’s just going on too much.
“When we’re commentating, you know, we’re just waiting for it to happen at the moment because we just know there’s a next mistake coming from Ferrari very soon.”
In the end, you wouldn’t be wrong to believe that the Ferrari team, who are watching both world title’s slip away from their grasp, will make another mistake.
Rosberg essentially hit the nail on the head with his statement: ‘we just know there’s a mistake coming from Ferrari very soon.’
Red Bull are currently walking away with both titles and Ferrari now have to fight over second place which is threatened from Mercedes, who are third.
Losing both world titles looks to be the most likely scenario but with the added pressure mounted on by Mercedes and racing at home, in front of their beloved Tifosi, it’s likely they will make a mistake of some degree – in the pit stop or strategy.
At the same time, Ferrari may pull out the unexpected and perfect their race strategy and pit stops at home – even if it is a one-off occurrence for the remainder of the season.
That’s it for the article: Will Ferrari fluster at Italian Grand Prix? What do you think, will Ferrari fluster at home – in front of their Tifosi? Let us know in the comments!
