British GT: 2022 Snetterton Preview
21st June 2022The British GT Championship heads to the Snetterton Circuit for the fifth and sixth round of the 2022 season as the sport reaches its halfway point.
Both rounds five and six will be held this weekend at the Snetterton Circuit, 19 miles south west of Norwich, on the venue’s 300 layout. This will give RAM Racing’s 59 year old, Ian Loggie, a great opportunity to extend his championship lead from the likes of WPI Motorsport’s pairing Michael Igoe and Phil Keen, who are tied second.
Sunday’s two hours of racing, in one hour sessions, follows the championship’s previous race at Donington Park where Enduro Motorsport’s Morgan Tillbrook and Marcus Clutton (GT3), and Academy Motorsport’s Matt Cowley and Marco Signoretti (GT4) scored their first championship wins of the season.
GT3
As the paddock arrives in Snetterton, Loggie leads the drivers standings with 65.5 points to his name. Even after a pointless round at Donington, the championship leader still has a 15.5-point gap ahead of his closest rivals: Igoe and Keen.
However, the Lamborghini pairing have the edge over Loggie as Keen has secured victory in Snetterton twice over the last four seasons. During the time same period, Loggie only managed to secure one race win at the venue last season.
In Donington, Tillbrook and Clutton took the largest gap to victory in British GT3 history – just under a minute, pole position and the fastest lap, the two are still in reach of the title. Despite the fact Tillbrook and Clutton are currently sat P6, 24 points behind Loggie.
At the moment, following Loggie’s good start to the season, RAM Racing lead the teams standings with 77 points to their name. This is a fairly comfortable gap to their closest rivals: WPI Motorsport, who are sat in second-place on 50 points. While Balfe Motorsport trails in P3, one point behind WPI.
Will Loggie be able to extend his championship lead this weekend, or will he be put under pressure by the likes of Igoe and Keen?
GT4
It has been a stellar start to the season for Steller Motorsport’s Richard Williams and Sennan Fielding, who currently top the GT4 drivers standings with 78.5 points. However, Williams and Fielding under significant pressure from Newbrdige Motorsport’s pairing, Matt Topham and Darren Turner who are only four points behind the Steller duo, in second-place.
Last time out, at Donington Park, the Academy duo, Cowley and Signoretti, secured their first wins of their season to see them in contention for the title. The same partnership between Cowley, Mustang and Academy saw the chequered flag first at Snetterton last season.
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Jordan Collard has been known to be good around Norwich’s race track and would be keeping an eye on across the weekend as the British driver eyes another visit to Victory Lane. However, Collard and Tom Edgar will have to overcome a five-second Success Penalty, which is set to be served on Race 1
This begs the question: will the GT4 British GT drivers standings change hands at the end of the weekend?
When is it on and how can I watch it?
While motor racing might always be enjoyed trackside, there are still plenty of ways to watch the weekend unfold. Qualifying and both races will be broadcasted live on SRO’s GT World YouTube chanel, BritishGT.com and British GT’s Facebook page.
