Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris summoned for driving slowly

Mercedes’ seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, and McLaren’s Lando Norris have been summoned to the race stewards after Saturday’s qualifying session.

After a relatively poor qualifying session for both teams, the British drivers have been summoned to the stewards for allegedly driving too slowly in qualifying.

In Qualifying 2, McLaren’s young Briton reported to his pit wall that Hamilton was ‘driving unnecessarily slowly’ as the seven-time world champion looked to get a tow down the main straight.

Unlike Hamilton who made it to the final qualifying session and qualified P7, Norris finished the session in P11 ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

In the FIA summons, Document 27 states:

“Alleged breach by cars 44 [Hamilton] and 4 [Norris] of Article 33.4 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and non-compliance with Race Director’s Note (Doc. 20); driving unnecessarily slowly at 18:59.”

According to the Race Directors notes, in a bid to prevent drivers going too slowly on ‘reconnaissance’ laps, the drivers must stay below a maximum delta which is set by the FIA.

Article 33.4 of the F1 sporting regulations, which both drivers have allegedly breached, coincides with the Race Director’s event notes.

The regulation states:

“At no time may a car be driven unnecessarily slowly, erratically or in a manner which could be deemed potentially dangerous to other drivers or any other person.”

Both Norris and Hamilton are required to report to the stewards at 20:20 local time, 17:20 BST.

That’s it for the article: Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris summoned for driving slowly! What do you think, should one or both drivers be punished/unpunished for driving too slowly? Let us know in the comments!
