F1: 5 things fans should look forward to in 2022
4th January 2022F1: 5 things fans should look forward to in 2022
2022. A new year, a new season and new regulations that should spice up the upcoming Formula One world championship.
Here are five things fans should look forward to in the 2022 season!
New car
Out with the old and in with the new. The new technical regulations will be given their real-life tests this season as the FIA and F1 bring in new cars for 2022. The cars were initially planned to be introduced in 2021 but, after the pandemic struck in 2020, the plans were delayed until 2022.
The next generation of F1, first showcased at the 2021 British Grand Prix, will be bulkier than the previous generation. It is also speculated that they will initially be slower at the beginning of the season.
At first, the cars were showcased without the DRS (Drag Reduction System) activator, which lifts up the upper rear-wing to produce less drag and more straight line speed. However, it has been reported the DRS will remain on the cars this season.
Closer Racing
In conjunction, the new 2022 cars have been specifically designed to allow cars to follow each other better.
This was a major flaw in the most recent generation of F1 as the cars produced a significant amount of ‘dirty air.’ This type of air was the out-wash the current F1 cars produced as it cut through undisturbed air, which impacted the cars following in behind with the main issue being a loss of front downforce.
In the previous generation of F1 cars, the amount of dirty air produced was 35% at 20 meters and increased to 46% at 10m. However, the newer cars significantly cut that amount down to 4% at 20m and 18% at 10m.
This means the fans could witness more entertaining action more frequently than what we have previously experienced.
Number One
The car number one will finally make its return to the grid as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen stands as the defending world champion. As such, the current world champion has the opportunity to plaster the #1 onto their car for the following season.

The last time #1 was showcased on another car was all the way back in 2014 where Sebastian Vettel had it on his Red Bull, after he won the 2013 championship. Since then, Lewis Hamilton – and former F1 driver, Nico Rosberg – has won the championship. However, the seven-time world champion didn’t opt to run with the number on his car.

A new reigning world champion
After Verstappen pipped Hamilton across the line, in one of the most controversial finishes to an F1 season, the Dutch Red Bull driver has claimed his first world title. As a result, the Dutchman will now go into 2022 defending his prestigious position as a world champion.
Despite the confidence boost Verstappen may have inherited from winning his maiden championship, he will still have to face his 2021 championship rival, Hamilton, who will be charging towards his record-breaking eighth world title.
While it was a thrilling rivalry between Verstappen and Hamilton, in 2021, this season may be slightly watered down due to the penalty points both drivers have on their current super licences. As it stands, Verstappen stands on seven while Hamilton has two. Any driver which gains 12 points will receive an automatic race ban for the following race.
A new track
New car, new season, new regulations and an entirely new circuit will be introduced this season: Miami.
The street circuit will be set around the Hard Rock Stadium, as a focal point, which hosts the Miami Dolphins National Football League team. F1 have reported that the track was designed with ‘spectacular racing in mind’ and it’s expected to have a Albert Park-vibe to it, which hosts the Australian Grand Prix.
The inaugural Miami Grand Prix will be the first visit to the United States of America, in May. Then the sport will return to US soil for the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas, in October.
