F2 Feature Race: red flags ends race early in Saudi Arabia

Prema’s Oscar Piastri has one hand on the Formula Two world drivers championship as the New Zealander extended his championship lead in the strangest of circumstances.

How the race unfolded

The race was red flagged soon shortly after the five red lights went out as Charouz’s Enzo Fittipaldi collected ART’s Theo Pourchaire – who stalled in his starting position.

Doctor Ian Roberts, who started at the back of the pack in the medical car, was straight onto the scene.

Both drivers involved in the incident at the start were conscious and removed from the car. From there they were both transported, by ambulance and helicopter, to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital.

After the long red flag period, the feature race finally got underway when the safety car filtered back into the pits as race control opted for a rolling start and a time limit on the race. This was down to the upcoming Formula One race.

With 13 minutes left on the clock the championship and race leader, Piastri, had cleared out one second gap to his teammate Robert Shwartzman.

The race was brought to a premature end, with a red flag, as Campos’ Oil Caldwell lost the rear of his car as he blasted around turn 22. The young British driver then collected Charouz’s Guilherme Samaia as he skidded back onto the racing line.

Piastri finished P5, as the red flag was waved, but before the stops and a lap prior to the red flag the Prema driver secured the race win.

However, as a result of Piastri and Shwartzman’s final classification in the race, P1 and P2 respectively, it means Prema have secured the team’s championship.
